42 Rules for Engaging Members Through Gamification: Unlock the Secrets of Motivation, Community and Fun
by Shelly Alcorn, Willis Turner

Play predates the development of human culture and our brains are hard-wired to use play as a tool to accelerate learning, strategically explore unfamiliar environments and develop collaborative social connections. Games are human created, formalized structures and processes designed to maximize engagement and get the most out of the "play" impulse. In fact, gaming comes so naturally to us we don't even notice it for what it is.

Two examples of large scale gaming structures include our educational and political systems. Going deeper into understanding how gaming structures work, and intentionally applying those mechanics can give us an advantage when designing experiences meant to engage our members in the work of our associations.

Although games have been with us since we first learned to scratch marks on small rocks, what is new is the impact the internet and technology is having on games and players alike. What was simple activity in the past, is rapidly turning into a large scale social phenomenon. At some point the term "gamer" will lose it relevancy and we will recognize gamers for what they are - an increasingly sophisticated class of experience consumers.

Games are the first mass media of the 21st century and gaming literacy is an essential skill all executives, staff and volunteers need to develop in order to attract, appeal to and invite a new generation of players to play the association game.

In this book, we take a simple, practical approach to helping you and your volunteers take these ideas one step farther. By using these 42 rules, you will be able to use simple gaming mechanics to increase member engagement, improve educational outcomes and build community in your industry or profession.

You Are Probability: Surfing the Matrix
by Andrea Diem-Lane and David C. Lane

As I glance around the room, I notice that after lecturing for an hour and a forty-five minutes straight on quantum theory, desultory decussation, and Wolfram's new kind of science, I see a Krispy Crème glaze descend over a few of my student's eyes. The fantastic implications of chance and necessity (to echo the title of biologist Jacques Monod's famous 1970's book) appears either to have gone over their heads or, more likely, seems of little practical consequence in their day to day lives. I then try to draw out more clearly how understanding probability can radically alter how one views life. Imagine in this moment that you have a California Lottery “scratcher” ticket and as you systematically scratch off your numbers and their adjoining prizes you realize in the middle of class that you have won a mega jackpot of 5 million dollars. What would you do? I suspect that most of my students would stand up and leave the room there and then. One thing is for sure, however: it would wake them up and give them a huge and intoxicating adrenalin rush. The winning student might later ruminate about his or her good fortune and reflect upon how lucky they were (given the astronomical odds against them-1 in 2,400,000) in securing that particular ticket. I give this illustration to my students because a winning lottery number exponentially pales in comparison to the odds against them being alive and breathing (even if they nod off a bit here and there) at this very juncture in history. But in order to appreciate the anomaly of one's existence it is necessary to get a deeper understanding of the theory of large numbers.

A Spiritual Adventure in India: From the Caves and Jungles of Hindostan
by Madame Blavatsky

This is probably Madame Blavatsky's most readable book, usually published under the title "From the Caves and Jungles of Hindostan." It contains much of her spiritual travels throughout India with a number of keen observations. In many ways, this is a pioneering work by a feminist intellectual way ahead of her time. Fascinating reading.

On a winter day in 1988, history professor Bob Weddell visits a cemetery in western Tennessee. He meets an elderly man who tells him things witnessed there decades ago. A sinkhole swallows Weddell and his truck into an unexplored cave. Following what he believes to be a passage to the surface, he finds himself in 1862 with a group of Confederate soldiers. Invisible to all, he hitches a ride on a supply wagon to the Confederate camp at Corinth. He witnesses General Albert Sidney Johnston planning the attack on the Union Army twenty miles away. Weddell later travels north, slipping past sentries to Pittsburg Landing. He locates General Stephen Hurlburt, eavesdrops on conversations, views documents, and finds his 19-year old great-grandfather, Henry. The Confederate attack April 6 is a disaster for the Union Army. Professor Weddell follows Henry throughout the two-day battle as Union troops retreat, then advance. The commentary regarding the Hell-on-Earth fight can only be told by a witness to the slaughter. Weddell accompanies his great-grandfather and comrades both nights as they check dead and wounded, the latter expressing thoughts and feelings to one another. Weddell can only be seen by mortally wounded men. Following the battle, Weddell witnesses General Grant addressing his troops. Through a mishap he finds himself in a river swimming for his life. His return to 1988 is filled with the doubts of even the people close to him about the veracity of his tale.

Reflections

Georgina Castle is a successful San Francisco antiques dealer with more than a passing acquaintance with the supernatural. Her fear of again encountering an entity has altered her life and ruined her marriage. But life goes on. One day, while hosting an estate sale for a friend, she purchases a matching pair of early 18th century French mirrors for her collection. She knows that the owner of the mirrors disappeared without a trace many years ago, but she is curious about their earlier origins. She researches their marks and finds that the maker is Raphaël Verrier, a controversial man about whom her grandfather, a mirror expert, wrote a short book. But just as she begins to read the book, she realizes that something is not right with one of the mirrors. Not only does the image of a woman appear within the glass, it also speaks and begs for help. And as Georgina and her friends encounter the woman's reflection and try to communicate with her and free her spirit, the story of Raphaël and his relationship with her unfolds on the pages of Georgina's grandfather's book.
